What I Ate Wednesday 8.29.12

I missed last week's What I Ate Wednesday because I was too busy moving in...and eating! It was my very first time in New Orleans and the day after I first flew in, my parents and Spencer all came to visit and help me get settled into my new place. We spent the entire week walking around the streets of downtown New Orleans, exploring all the sights and attractions that were within walking distance of my apartment. This also meant that we would be sampling some awesome New Orleans cuisine.

This trip, obviously, would not have been satisfactory without a generous sampling of the good food NOLA has to offer. And this is what I'm dedicating my WIAW to this week!

I wrote a very lengthy post on my first experience of New Orleans here, but here's a quick snapshot of some of the fun stuff I got to try while my family came to visit:

Beignets from Cafe du Monde

We went to Acme Oyster House and sampled some food and I have to say that my overall verdict is to come for drinks and the oysters. The gumbo was forgettable, and so were the po' boys, unfortunately.

The Stanley muffaletta poor boy sandwich

Mr. B's Bistro was an amazing find. It was fine dining without too much frill but delivered a ton of flavor. If you were to visit New Orleans you cannot leave without trying this place out! Even classics like gumbo and shrimp and grits get taken up a notch on the classy ladder.

Have you ever tried turtle soup? Vanilla pork belly over chicory butter grits? A crabmeat cheesecake? These all sound indulgent and cholesterol-rich, but holy cow, they were amazing dishes. After a long day of sightseeing and getting slightly rained on, this was just the place we wanted to have dinner. Palace Cafe on Canal Street. Everything was delicious and comforting! I was definitely intrigued by all of these new creations and I'm so glad I tried them all.

Did you try some new food this week? What was your favorite meal?

xo,
k.

  1. I'm vegan, so obviously I could eat nothing in New Orleans. I'm kidding actually, but I'm sure I would have some challenges.

I hope you are loving your new home and are weathering Isaac as well as possible.
